eBay is expanding its partnership with Klarna, a service that lets shoppers buy now, pay later. Originally launched in Germany, eBay is expanding the Klarna partnership to additional countries. “The move gives eBay buyers more choice and flexibility in how they pay and aligns with the evolving preferences of today’s shoppers,” eBay said in a press release Thursday announcing the deal.
eBay referenced its unique inventory as being suitable for interest-free Buy Now, Pay Later (BNPL) checkout options – such as “a rare collectible, pre-loved luxury item, or hard-to-find car parts,” which are eBay’s priority categories, also called its Focus Category strategy.
eBay referenced a feature that allows Klarna users to resell in minutes any items bought through its app on eBay, “with automatic listing details and images.” Shoppers can “maximize the worth of their past purchases, generate extra income, and contribute to recommerce.”
Expanding from Germany, eBay is offering Klarna’s payment options to shoppers in the UK, Austria, France, Italy, the Netherlands, and Spain, and will soon add additional markets. “With holiday shopping expected to increase this season, eBay shoppers can choose from Klarna’s payment options depending on their location, including interest-free Pay in 3, Pay in 30 days, or Financing for larger purchases with monthly repayments made over a longer period of time,” it wrote.
eBay also believes the Klarna BNPL feature will help it tap into a younger demographic, and said the new feature coincides with eBay’s recent announcement of free selling in the UK, which, “combined with a new streamlined listing process, simple delivery, and enhanced wallet functionality through eBay Balance, is improving the selling experience on eBay.”
